This release contains geospatial data digitized from the Map Showing Geology, Structure, and Oil and Gas Fields in the Sterling 1x2 Degree Quadrangle, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas (Scott, 1978) and was compiled as part of the National Geologic Synthesis project. The geospatial data depicts the geology of this quadrangle, which is dominated by Quaternary alluvial and aeolian deposits overlying Tertiary and Cretaceous sedimentary rock, including the Ogallala formation, the Fox Hills sandstone, and the Pierre shale. Under the direction and funding of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) with guidance and encouragement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there has been a decadal strategic plan in place to call for geologic mapping across the nation. This compilation presents total organic carbon and pyrolysis analysis data for the Pierre Shale, Niobrara Formation, and other Cretaceous marine shales in the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province. The data was used to characterize these potential source rock intervals in support of the oil and gas resource assessment in the province. The data was compiled from the publicly available files at the USGS Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado and from published literature.

This digital data release contains geospatial geologic data compiled for the Lamar 250k quadrangle, a region in eastern Colorado and western Kansas, which is predominantly covered by Quaternary deposits that overlay Cretaceous bedrock. Geologic data, compiled from published sources, include the location and characteristics of geologic contacts and faults, mapped geologic polygons, and ammonite fossils. The geologic database includes spatial feature classes that collectively contain the geologic information that are presented in the previously published map plate.
