This data release includes raw detrital zircon U-Pb data for isolated sandstones in Upper Triassic deposits of the Auld Lang Syne basin of northwest Nevada, USA. Detrital zircon U-Pb data for 11 sandstone samples (3269 zircon U-Pb dates) were acquired via LA-ICP-MS at the University of Arizona LaserChron Center for 11 sandstone samples. Primary insights from the data are twofold: 1) The data provide information about sediment provenance and indicate that sediment of the Auld Lang Syne basin was primarily derived from near the ancestral Ouachita orogen of Texas and Oklahoma. Sediment was transported to the Auld Lang Syne basin by a Late Triassic transcontinental river system, recorded today by the Upper Triassic...
The Dakota Formation in southern Utah (Kaiparowits Plateau region) is a succession of fluvial through shallow-marine facies formed during the initial phase of filling of the Cretaceous foreland basin of the Sevier orogen. It records a number of relative sea-level fluctuations of different frequency and magnitude, controlled by both tectonic and eustatic processes during the Early to Late Cenomanian. The Dakota Formation is divided into eight units separated by regionally correlatable surfaces that formed in response to relative sea-level fluctuations. Units 1?6B represent, from bottom to top, valley-filling deposits of braided streams (unit 1), alluvial plain with anastomosed to meandering streams (2), tide-influenced...

Caddisfly-dominated microbial-carbonate mounds and avian eggshell fragments are common in a nearshore, oolite facies of the Tipton Shale Member of the Eocene Green River Formation. The fossils occur in a 9 m thick carbonate sequence exposed on the south-west flank of Essex Mountain, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The eggshell was determined to be of avian origin by examination of the radial eggshell microstructure by scanning electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy. Common allochems in the limestone include: ooids, pisoids, oncoids, ostracods, gastropods, intraclasts, caddisfly larval/pupal cases, fish bones, avian bones and avian eggshell fragments. Carbonate mineralogy varies between 95% calcite and 95%...
The effect of rock fragments and rock fragment cover on the accumulation of airborne dust was examined in a long-term field experiment in the Negev desert of Israel. Four parameters were studied: pebble eccentricity, pebble size, pebble flattening and cover density. The effect of these parameters on the accumulation of dust on the pebbles, on the accumulation of dust between and underneath the pebbles, and on total dust accumulation (pebbles+interpebble space) was measured separately. Accumulation on the pebbles increased as the pebbles became larger, less flattened and more elongated, and as cover density increased. Accumulation between and underneath the pebbles increased as the pebbles became smaller, more flattened...

The data contained in these tables detail the areal extent of exposed sand, in square meters, along the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona, and Bright Angel Creek, Arizona, within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Grand Canyon National Park. Sand exposure areas are provided as a function of Colorado River discharge, as measured at Lees Ferry, Arizona, in increments of 1000 cubic feet per second. Exposed sand extents are subdivided into mapped and unmapped sand areas; at Colorado River discharge; at flows below 8,000 cubic feet per second, the total extent of exposed sand can be estimated as the sum of field-mapped sand and that sand which was unmapped, but estimated to be present across the study...

These data were compiled to perform analyses of hydrologic change, changes in sediment transport, and channel change within Moenkopi Wash, Arizona. Objective(s) of our study were to quantify the magnitude and timing of changes in hydrology, sediment transport, and channel form within Moenkopi Wash and to determine the downstream effects of those changes on sediment delivery downstream to the Little Colorado River, and the Colorado River. These data represent instantaneous discharge records, suspended-sediment sample records, topographic survey data, historical aerial imagery, and channel polygons and centerlines mapped on the historical imagery. Instantaneous discharge records in this study began in 1926 and extend...

Aerial imagery acquired using a fixed wing aircraft fitted with Post-Processing Kinematic (PPK) GPS, was processed using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry techniques to produce high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, orthomosaic images, and digital elevation models (DEMs). This dataset, produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) MD-DE-DC Water Science Center, consists of point clouds generated from the survey of four National Wildlife Refuges in New Jersey and Delaware in order to observe annual changes. Structure-from-Motion software, Agisoft Metashape, was used to perform processing on low-altitude digital aerial imagery acquired by a contractor utilizing a fixed wing aircraft. The aircraft...

Two tributary watersheds¬ Cottonwood Creek and Little Dry Creek¬ to the greater San Joaquin watershed, in California’s Central Valley were assessed for sediment and flow dynamics, between water years (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) 2011 and 2019. The two systems deliver suspended sediment to the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam, California. Because these two creeks are directly down river of Friant Dam, they become the most upstream source of sediment to the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam. Thus, is it important to assess their contribution to the San Joaquin system. Flow from each creek watershed, along with the San Joaquin River, was compared to continuously measured water surface elevations to quantify flow direction...

Sediment samples were collected from Los Padres reservoir in the Carmel River watershed, central California coast, between July 11 and 17, 2017, using a CME-45 barge-mounted drill rig, to characterize sedimentary properties in the reservoir deposits following the Soberanes Fire of 2016 and high river flows in winter 2017. Borehole samples were recovered using direct push coring with an Osterberg piston sampler operated by Taber Drilling Company of Sacramento, California, and overseen by AECOM, Inc. Sediment was recovered using a split-barrel sampler and a rotary drill bit was added to the sampler where needed to penetrate coarse sediment. Samples from four boreholes are described in this data release: three sampled...

This data release supersedes version 1.0, published in July 2021 at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9BHOPEP. Versioning details are documented in the accompanying Whiskeytown_VersionHistory.txt file The Carr Fire ignited in northern California in July 2018, and ultimately burned almost 300,000 acres (approximately half on federal lands), resulting in a federal major-disaster declaration (DR-4382). Approximately 93% of the area within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was burned extensively during the Carr Fire, including all of the landscape surrounding and draining into Whiskeytown Lake. Whiskeytown Lake, a federally managed reservoir, subsequently acted as a sediment trap for material eroded from hillslopes and streambeds...

This data release provides bathymetric change grids of four geographic areas of San Francisco Bay, California, comparing digital elevation models (DEMs) created from bathymetric data collected in the 1970s and 1980s with DEMs created from bathymetric data collected in the 2010s and 2020. These types of change analyses can provide information on the quantities and patterns of erosion and deposition in San Francisco Bay over the 9 to 47 years between surveys, and they reveals that the bay floor lost about 34 million cubic meters of sediment between the intervening time period. Results from this study can be used to assess how San Francisco Bay has responded to changes in the system such as sea-level rise and variation...

This data set contains estimates of bedload transport entering San Francisco Bay from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Bedload was estimated following the methods of van Rijn (1984) for the Sacramento River at Rio Vista (USGS 11455420) and the San Joaquin River at Jersey Point (USGS 11337190). The inputs the van Rijn (1984) equations included:bed-material particle size, bed-form dimensions, depth, and velocity. Bedload was estimated at 15-minute intervals from Water Year 2011 through Water Year 2020. A "low range" estimate and a "high range" estimate were made. The low-range estimate assumes plane bed conditions and uses only grain size to estimate a hydraulic roughness parameter. The high-range estimate incorporates...
