The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

The Pod (or pods) of Mature Source Rock is a critical element of the Total Petroleum System and incorporates all source rocks that potentially have generated hydrocarbons within the system. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province, and incorporates the known limit of thermally mature, organic-rich source rock(s) that is responsible for generating and expelling discovered and undiscovered petroleum accumulations, shows, or seeps within the Total Petroleum System. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock boundary was mapped by the province geologist after studying the extent of the source rock facies and the temperature and burial...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Uinta-Piceance Province is located in eastern Utah and western Colorado, encompassing all or parts of Delta, Garfield, Gunnison, Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, Ouray, Rio Blanco, and Routt Counties in Colorado and all or parts of Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Sanpete, Sevier, Uintah, Utah, and Wasatch Counties in Utah. The main population...

The hydrogen index (HI) is a parameter obtained from Rock-Eval data which reflects general hydrocarbon generation and maturation trends in petroleum systems. In the Mississippian Barnett Shale, the hydrogen index was used to map general boundaries between regions of oil and gas generation within the extents of the formation. Hydrogen index values were obtained via Rock-Eval analyses of Barnett Shale core samples. In this system, HI values greater than 100 represent primarily oil generation and HI values less than 100 represent primarily gas generation. Secondary gas generation is indicated by HI values less than 50. In addition, the 100 HI line was utilized to establish part of the assessment unit (AU) boundaries...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

Coalbed Methane wells are provided as a method for analysis and illustration of the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each point represents a well location and is symbolized as producing oil, gas, both oil and gas, or other (dry or unknown) using the status code in the attribute table. Data were provided by the Wyoming State Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. See supplemental information section for limitations and assumptions about data.

Tar sands represent a significant source of hydrocarbons in the United States. Also known by several other names including bitumen-bearing rocks, natural asphalt, tarry oil, bituminous rock, oil sands and rock asphalt, these rocks are mostly located on the margins of sedimentary basins. Maps of tar sands and deposits were digitized to illustrate their distribution and extent within the Total Petroleum System.

Regions of high or low potential for oil and gas resources in the Powder River Basin generally indicate where continuous oil and gas resources are more or less likely to be found. These regions are based on several kinds of structural features that were plotted using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and drawn on a map by an assessment geologist. Structural features include faults, anticlines, synclines, and lineaments which may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional rocks.
