Under the direction and funding of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) with guidance and encouragement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there has been a decadal strategic plan in place to call for geologic mapping across the nation. The top of the Upper Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone is present in the subsurface throughout the Uinta and Piceance basins of UT and CO and is easily recognized in the subsurface from geophysical well logs. This digital data release captures in digital form the results of two previously published contoured subsurface maps that were constructed on the top of Dakota Sandstone datum; one of the studies also included a map constructed on the top of the overlying Mancos Shale. This dataset is associated with a journal article "The Role of Organic Matter Diversity on the Re-Os Systematics of Organic-rich Sedimentary Units: Insights into the Controls of Isochron Age Determinations from the Lacustrine Green River Formation" and summarizes data generated by the Petroleum Geochemistry Research Laboratory that was used in this work. Data include bulk organic geochemistry on whole rocks and a few compound ratios based on analysis of extractable organic matter.

The informal Uteland Butte member of the Eocene Green River Formation in the Uinta Basin, Utah is one of the few examples of a continuous petroleum resource play in the world situated in a lacustrine sedimentary basin (Johnson and others, 2015; Birdwell and others, 2016). ESRI GRID raster datasets were created to display and quantify oil shale resources for eighteen zones in the Uinta Basin, Utah and Colorado as part of a 2010 National Oil Shale Assessment. The oil shale zones in descending order are: Bed 76, Bed 44, A Groove, Mahogany Zone, B Groove, R-6, L-5, R-5, L-4, R-4, L-3, R-3, L-2, R-2, L-1, R-1, L-0, and R-0. Each raster cell represents a one-acre square of the land surface and contains values for either oil yield in barrels per acre, gallons per ton, or isopach thickness, in feet, as defined by the grid name: *_b (barrels per acre), *_g (gallons per ton), and *_i (isopach thickness) where "*" can be replaced by the name of the oil shale zone.
