The goal of this study was to develop a suite of inter-related water quality monitoring approaches capable of modeling and estimating the spatial and temporal gradients of particulate and dissolved total mercury (THg) concentration, and particulate and dissolved methyl mercury (MeHg), concentration, in surface waters across the Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD). This suite of monitoring approaches included: a) data collection at fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, b) spatial mapping using boat-mounted flow-through sensors, and c) satellite-based remote sensing. The focus of this specific Child Page is to present laboratory measured spectral data associated with discrete...

From February 12 to March 8, 1981, EG and G Geometrics conducted an aeromagnetic survey in Montana for Anaconda Copper Company. A Piper Navajo aircraft was used to conducted the survey. The survey was flown along north-south flightlines spaced 660 feet at a nominal height of 450 feet above the terrain. Five uniformly spaced east-west tie-lines were also flown. During processing, the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) of 1975 was updated to 1981 and removed from the survey observations. The resultant anomalous magnetic field was contoured at a 4.0 gamma interval and plotted to map sheets. In 2016, the map sheets were scanned, registered, and the contours were digitized. The point data released here...

This data release includes physical and chemical data for samples from upland-source and streambank sampling sites in the Black Creek basin, Indiana. Data include total nitrogen and carbon concentrations, carbon species, total concentrations for 42 metals, and particle-size analysis. Source samples were identified as one of five land-use types: active cropland (corn, soybean, hay, and wheat), active horse pasture, roads, preserved forest, and streambanks of agricultural and non-agricultural channels. Source data were collected in August and September 2017. These data are used for source attribution in order to quantify the proportional contribution of individual sources to suspended sediment in the basin [Williamson...

Intersex in small- and largemouth bass has been observed in the upper Chesapeake Bay Watershed since 2003. This observation is indicative of exposure to estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals. In order to complement biological data sets and better identify the spatial and temporal nature of this end-point, discrete grab water samples were collected throughout the upper Chesapeake Bay Watershed for the evaluation of estrogenic activity. Data reported here are estrogenicity values derived from bioassay screening of OASIS-HLB extracts discrete grab water samples. Estrogenicity was determined using a bioluminescent yeast estrogen screen. Here we report estrogenicity data for selected sites in the Chesapeake Bay water...

As part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have partnered to evaluate the impacts of implementing agricultural conservation practices focused on nutrient management. Monitoring methods have been designed to allow for rapid assessment of water-quality changes in response to conservation efforts by focusing on subsurface-tile drainage and direct surface runoff from fields—the major pathways for nonpoint-source pollution to enter streams. Monitoring stations were established at the field edge that measured runoff volume and enabled the collection of samples...

These data are a part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. The overall goal is to develop high-resolution (1:25,000) interpretive maps, based on multibeam sonar data and seabed sampling, showing surficial geology and seabed sediment dynamics. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the data collected will aid research on the ecology of fish and invertebrate species that inhabit the region. The Sanctuary's research vessel, R/V Auk, visited a total of 169 locations on Stellwagen Bank during three separate surveys from September 2020 to August 2021. During these surveys a customized...

The Sanctuary's research vessel, R/V Auk, visited a total of 233 locations on Stellwagen Bank during six separate surveys from May 2016 to April 2019. During these surveys a customized...

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9C8NYTO. This data release has components of an analysis of the coverage, resolution, and representation of national public interests in streamflow information by the USGS streamflow gaging network that was active in water year 2020. The workflow for the analysis is implemented as scripts and functions in the statistical programming language R. The spatial framework for the analysis is based on from the National Hydrography Dataset medium resolution (1:100,000) segments, 12-digit Hydrologic Unit from the Watershed Boundary Dataset, and sites where USGS operated a streamflow gage in Water Year 2020. The analysis...

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in subsequent years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health stressors. These data document the mid-range Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and absorbance measurements as a function of wavelength with and without spectral corrections for selected stations...

Geophysical measurements were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at five sites in Interior Alaska in September 2021 for the purposes of imaging permafrost structure and quantifying variations in subsurface moisture content in relation to thaw features. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements were made along transects 110-222 meters (m) in length to quantify subsurface permafrost characteristics. ERT transects were collected across a fireline boundary within the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site where repeat measurements have been made since 2014; across and adjacent to two thermokarst lakes, Vault Lake and Goldstream Lake; and along two profiles at the North Star golf...
Geophysical measurements and related field data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) site in Interior Alaska from 2018 to 2020 to characterize subsurface thermal and hydrologic conditions along a permafrost thaw gradient. The APEX site is managed by the Bonanza Creek LTER (Long Term Ecological Research). Nine instrument monitoring sites (APEX1-APEX9) were established in April 2018. To quantify permafrost and thaw zone characteristics along the instrumented gradient, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data were collected in August 2018 along four 82 meter (m)-long transects between select sites: APEX1-3, APEX5-3, APEX5-7, and APEX6-8. Data were collected...
