On April 25, 2015, a large ( M7.8) earthquake shook much of central Nepal and was followed by a series of M>6 aftershocks, including a M7.3 event on May 12, 2015. This earthquake and aftershocks, referred to as the Gorkha earthquake sequence, caused thousands of fatalities, damaged and destroyed entire villages, and displaced millions of residents. The earthquakes also triggered thousands of landslides in the exceedingly steep topography of Nepal; these landslides were responsible for hundreds of fatalities, and blocked vital roads and trails to affected villages. With the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), and in collaboration...

This data release includes field measurements of flow velocity and optical image sequences used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocities via particle image velocimetry (PIV) from two rivers in Alaska. These data were acquired from the Salcha River on August 31, 2018, and the Tanana River on July 24, 2019. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of inferring flow velocities from optical image sequences acquired from a helicopter hovering above each river by tracking water surface features via various PIV algorithms and to develop a modular workflow for performing this type of analysis. Remote sensing of flow velocity could provide a more efficient, cost-effective alternative...

Feral burros (Equus asinus) and horses (E. ferus caballus) inhabiting public land in the western United States are intended to be managed at population levels established to promote a thriving, natural ecological balance. Like many large ungulate populations, management agencies employ aerial surveys to obtain estimates of horse and burro population sizes. Double-observer sightability (MDS) models perform well for estimating feral horse abundances, yet the effectiveness of these models for use in burro populations is less understood and may be different due to the smaller size, stoic behavior, and cryptic pelage of burros. These models help minimize detection bias, yet bias can be further reduced with models that...
