The glacial aquifer system of the United States encompasses all or parts of 25 states and is the most widely used supply of drinking water in the Nation (Maupin and Barber, 2005; Maupin and Arnold, 2010). A series of seven raster data sets were derived from a database of water-well drillers' records that was compiled in partial fulfillment of the goals of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Groundwater Availability and Use assessment program (U.S. Geological Survey, 2002). They contain hydrogeologic information for areas of the U.S. that are north of the southern limit of Pleistocene glaciation, including the total thickness of glacial deposits, thickness of coarse-grained sediment within the glacial deposits, specific-capacity...

Our research focuses on developing methods to analyze volcano-hydrothermal systems and on the application of these methods to particular volcanic systems in the western United States. Specific research questions include (1) What are the modes of heat and mass transport from magma to the shallow subsurface? (2) What are the pressure, temperature, and fluid-saturation conditions between magma and the land surface? (3) What controls the permeability of volcanoes? How does it vary in space and time? What role do temporal variations in permeability play in the evolution of volcanogenic hydrothermal systems and episodes of volcanic unrest? (4) How well-coupled are various fluid flow, transport, and mechanical deformation...
The NRP had its beginnings in the late 1950's. Since that time, the program has grown to encompass a broad spectrum of scientific investigations. The sciences of hydrology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, ecology, biology, geology, and engineering are used to gain a fundamental understanding of the processes that affect the availability, movement, and quality of the Nation's water resources. Results of NRP's long-term research investigations often lead to the development of new concepts, techniques, and approaches that are applicable not only to the solution of current water problems, but also to future issues that may affect the Nation's water resources. Basic tools of hydrology that have been developed by the...

The 'UVX: Ore Reserve Estimates 1983 - 85, Drilling Summary and Geologic Reports' file is part of the A. F. Budge Mining Ltd. Mining collection. A. F. Budge Mining Ltd., a British company owned by Tony Budge, controlled properties across several western U. S. states and northern Mexico. The company was active in Arizona during the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The collection consists of economic geologic information including maps, logs, reports and records. A few properties make up most of the collection: Vulture, United Verde Extension and Korn Kob.
Quantitative understanding of groundwater and gas-rich fluid- and thermodynamics in volcanic areas is important for several reasons: 1) as a major source of hazard such as propellant in steam-driven explosions, lubricant in mudflows, and transport agent for toxic constituents such as arsenic and mercury that are dissolved from fresh volcanic rock, 2) groundwater pressure, temperature and chemical changes might signal one of the earliest warnings of volcanic unrest, 3) exploration and mining of geothermal energy and mineral deposits. Many of the geochemical, geodetic, and seismic signals measured at the ground surface as part of the volcano monitoring strategies have hydrothermal origins or magmatic origins modulated...

Lake Poinsett is a 260-hectare (640 acres) lake located on Crowley’s Ridge in northeastern Arkansas, approximately 6 km southeast of Harrisburg, Arkansas within Poinsett County. The lake was built for recreation by the Arkansas Highway Department in 1960 by constructing a roughly 800-meter dam across the southern boundary of the Distress Creek watershed. The dam is currently operated by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). AGFC and Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC) plan to drain the lake to allow access for a series of bank stabilization and dam safety improvements. Because none of the original blueprints exist, AGFC asked the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a series of differential...

A Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model was developed to estimate annual recharge and evapotranspiration (ET) for Fauquier County, Virginia, for the period 1996 through 2015. The model was developed as part of a study to assess groundwater availability in the fractured-rock aquifers underlying Fauquier County. The model is documented in the associated report, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5056. The model was calibrated by comparing annual base-flow estimates from the hydrograph separation technique PART to annual recharge estimates from the SWB model for available years of streamflow record at two sites (01643700 and 01656000) within the model area. Selected SWB model parameters were...

This dataset is a file of contour lines representing the estimated altitude of the water table in western Sarpy County. This dataset was developed as part of a cooperative study between the Papillion-Missouri River Natural Resources District (PMRNRD) and USGS which began in 2017. The goal of this study was to develop a hydrogeologic visualization model of western Sarpy County using GeoScene3D. In 2016, the PMRNRD contracted airborne electromagnetic surveys (AEM) of the area to be completed to better understand the stratigraphy and hydrogeology of the western Sarpy County area. The PMRNRD determined that they wanted to incorporate the AEM data into a visualization tool that would allow PMRNRD staff to easily interact...

The High Plains aquifer extends from approximately 32 to 44 degrees north latitude and 96 degrees 30 minutes to 106 degrees west longitude. The aquifer underlies about 175,000 square miles in parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. This digital dataset consists of a raster of water-level changes for the High Plains aquifer, predevelopment (about 1950) to 2019. It was created using water-level measurements from 2,741 wells measured in both the predevelopment period (about 1950) and in 2019, the latest available static water level measured in 2015 to 2018 from 71 wells in New Mexico and using other published information on water-level change in areas with few water-level...

This data release pertains to a seepage investigation and dye tracing study conducted in the Big Creek watershed of Newton County, Arkansas. The seepage dataset includes geospatial files of discharge measurement points and zero-flow observations along with vector lines delineating losing and gaining stream reaches. The dye tracing dataset consists of geospatial files of monitoring sites, dye injection location, and dye flow paths. Hydrologic systems in karst environments have a high degree of interconnectivity between surface water and groundwater systems. Because of this interconnectivity, activities which occur on the surface in karst environments have a direct impact on the water quality and quantity of karst...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), at the request of the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC), evaluated the capabilities of two borehole technologies to measure horizontal groundwater velocity and direction of flow in a parallel-plate fractured-rock simulator. A colloidal borescope flowmeter (HB) and a heat-pulse flowmeter (HH) were deployed in 4-inch and 6-inch inner-diameter simulated uncased wells that spanned 0.39- and 1.0-inch apertures with simulated groundwater velocities ranging from 2 to 958 feet per day. Measurements were made at the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility in the Hydraulics Laboratory and the Indianapolis office of the USGS Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center. Ten measurements...

The temperature and surface geophysical data contained in this release have primarily been collected to support groundwater/surface water methods development, and to characterize the hydrogeological controls on native brook trout habitat. All data have been collected since 2010 along the Quashnet River corridor located on Cape Cod, MA, USA. Cape Cod is a peninsula in southeastern coastal Massachusetts, USA, composed primarily of highly permeable unconsolidated glacial moraine and outwash deposits. The largest of the Cape Cod sole-source aquifers occupies a western (landward) section of the peninsula, and is incised by several linear valleys that drain groundwater south to the Atlantic Ocean via baseflow-dominated...
