This study deployed acoustic telemetry at the Fox River Navigational System Authority (FRNSA) in lock #2 and the upstream and downstream pools in Kaukauna, WI to document movements and behavior of telemetered fish species in response to injection of carbon dioxide. Telemetry equipment was setup in the test area for approximately 2 months during the summer of 2019. CSV metadata includes telemetry data with position estimates for fish during this time.
The data includes dates, places, and times of sampling events for eggs of invasive Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) in tributaries to the Great Lakes in 2021 and 2022. Reference data on locations and dates sampled, gears used, and effort are included. Developmental stages for a subset of undamaged, fertilized eggs are provided. Tables include common fields to allow for integration into a relational database to aid data extraction and associating data among tables. These data are bathymetry (river bottom elevation) in XYZ format (Easting, Northing, Elevation), generated from the September 17–18, 2020, survey of the Kentucky Dam tailwater from just downstream from Kentucky Dam to approximately 1,500 feet upstream from the I-24 bridge (about 1 mile total length). Bathymetric data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna. The ADCP and GNSS antenna were mounted on a marine survey vessel, and data were collected as the survey vessel traversed the tailwater along planned survey lines. There was typically one reciprocal pair (two passes) of data collected per line. There was a total...

The data consists of survival, length and weight of grass carp and black carp gavaged with an oral dose of antimycin A in two carriers, corn oil and ethanol.
Data represent a comparison of herding techniques commonly used by natural resource agencies and the public to increase removal or harvest of invasive carp (i.e., Silver Carp) from U.S. waterways. Sites on lower Perche Creek, Columbia, MO (2018 August 9th to 2018 October 26th) were contained using block nets and treated with one of five herding techniques: (1) method commonly used by commercial fishers in the U.S. (“commercial technique”), (2) pulsed-DC electrofishing (“electric technique”), (3) broadband sound administered with underwater speakers (“sound technique”), (4) both sound and electric in combination (“combination technique”), and (5) solely the boat with no added stimulus (“control”). Sites were administered...
The BioAcoustic Fish Fence (BAFF; Fish Guidance Systems Ltd.) is a multi-modal deterrent that utilizes a combination of lights, sound, and bubbles to guide fish away from a location. An experimental deployment of a BAFF is currently ongoing at Barkley Lock and Dam on the Cumberland River near Grand Rivers, KY. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., VEMCO and HTI) deployed in the vicinity of Barkley Lock and Dam to evaluate fish movement and response to the BAFF. Silver carp, grass carp, and native fish species were detected with this system. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

Data set includes water Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O for the Mississippi River and tributaries, and otolith Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and δ18O data from bigheaded carp (Silver Carp and BIghead Carp) collected in navigation pools 16-19 of the Upper Mississippi River in 2016 to 2018. Bigheaded carp (Bighead Carp and Silver Carp) are invasive species in the US and have spread throughout most of the lower Mississippi River Basin. Population abundance upstream of Lock and Dam 19 (LD19) on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) has likely been limited by the high-head dam at this location, which restricts all upstream fish passage to the lock chamber. To determine early-life environments of adult bigheaded carp captured upstream LD19 at the...

In 2016, for the first time, an abundance of age-0 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were captured at several sites upstream of Lock and Dam 19 on the Upper Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. These data were collected in an attempt to determine the early life environments and frequency and timing of the reproductive events that led to a large year class of age-0 silver carp. This information is important for informing decisions about control measures. We sampled these fish to determine age (days) and early life environments using their otoliths. Sampled age-0 silver carp were collected from navigation Pools 18 and 19 from July–October 2016 using a variety of sampling gears. We aged these fish by counting...

The Underwater Acoustic Deterrent System is an experimental deterrent that utilizes underwater sounds to deter invasive carps. An experimental deployment and evaluation of a UADS is currently being conducted at Lock 19 on the Mississippi River, near Keokuk, Iowa. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., 307 kHz HTI and 69 kHz VEMCO) deployed at and around Lock 19 to evaluate fish movement and response to the UADS in 2021 and 2022. Silver Carp, Bighead Carp, Grass Carp, and a variety of native fish species were tagged and monitored with the telemetry arrays. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
This is the qPCR and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) data in support of the article "Validation of a portable eDNA detection kit for invasive carps". There are four types of data contained in five files including: limit of detection analysis for each method (qPCR and LAMP), qPCR analysis and LAMP analysis of eDNA samples collected over time from ponds containing 3 or 33 Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) mixed with thousands of baitfish. The standards and controls data collected with the eDNA sample analysis are split into separate files for each method to simplify the statistical analysis of the eDNA sample data.

This dataset includes information derived from a Vemco telemetry array located at Lock and Dam 15 on the Mississippi River near Rock Island, IL and a longitudinal telemetry array that ranges from Pool 14 to Pool 19. Silver carp, bighead carp, and paddlefish were detected with this system. Lock Queue Reports, which detail the daily lock operation for river traffic, were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Temperature data were recorded on the Vemco receivers and stage height data were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
These data are bathymetry (river bottom elevation) and depth-averaged velocities generated from the September 17–18, 2020, survey of the Kentucky Dam tailwater from just downstream from Kentucky Dam to approximately 1,500 feet upstream from the I-24 bridge (about 1 mile total length). Bathymetry and velocity data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna with submeter accuracy. Limited information is known regarding the rotifer community on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). Studies have shown that rotifers are a common prey for invasive bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix) as well as native fishes of the UMR and there is concern these invasive carp will compete with native fishes for food resources. This study was conducted to provide baseline rotifer community data before range expansion of these invasive carps into the upper reaches of the UMR. Vertical tows were taken to collect rotifer samples over a four year period in Lake Pepin, a natural riverine lake in Pool 4 of the UMR. Four dominant genera (Keratella, Polyarthra, Trichocerca and Brachionus)...

Water velocities were measured at discrete cross-sections along an approximately 1-mile reach of the Kentucky Dam tailwater on September 12 and 17-18, 2020, using a 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The data were geo-referenced with an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna with submeter accuracy. The ADCP and GNSS antenna were mounted on a marine survey vessel, and data were collected as the survey vessel traversed the tailwater along planned survey lines. There was typically one reciprocal pair (two passes) of data collected per line. There was a total of 53 survey lines equally spaced 100 feet apart and oriented approximately perpendicular to the primary flow direction....

This dataset accompanies the article "Upstream experience and experimental translocation of invasive bigheaded carps results in increased upstream passage success at a navigation lock in a large river". The data come from the experimental capture and tagging of invasive bigheaded carp with acoustic transmitters and physically moving some groups farther downstream. These transmitters emit signals that are detected and recorded on receivers that are strategically placed above, within, and below Mississippi River Lock and Dam 19 (LD 19). Once the data from the receivers were downloaded, we could show when successful upstream passage through LD19 occurs and compare the origin of the fish and the physical characteristics...

Invasive silver (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead (H. nobilis) carp, collectively referred to as bigheaded carps, threaten aquatic ecosystems of the Upper Midwestern United States. Due to extensive ecological impacts associated with these species, prevention of their further range expansion is the aim for fisheries management. Recent behavioral studies indicate bigheaded carps are deterred by acoustic barriers and exhibit negative phonotaxis in response to anthropogenic sound sources (≥ 150 dB re 1 μPa SPLrms). However, the impact of long-term exposure to these sounds on the hearing capabilities of bigheaded carps has not been well documented. In this study, the auditory evoked potential (AEP) technique...
