The Yellowknife Study Area (YSA), Northwest Territories, Canada, was established in 1961 by H. W. Murdy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for the study of wetland and waterfowl ecology. The study area is located on the western edge of the Precambrian Shield and edge of the taiga and is recognized for its high wetland densities and waterfowl abundance. The region is underlain by discontinuous, warm permafrost and hence vulnerable to a warming climate. The completion of Highway 3 in early 1960s provided the first access to the region for development, research, and monitoring. The YSA is a 38-sq km area centered on Highway 3, extending 48 km in length. In the 1960s, it encompassed 262 natural ponds and 313 man-made...

In September 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, conducted high-resolution geophysical mapping and sediment sampling to determine the distribution of historical mine tailings on the floor of Lake Superior. Large amounts of waste material from copper mining, locally known as “stamp sands,” were dumped into the lake in the early 20th century, with wide-reaching consequences that have continued into the present. Mapping was focused offshore of the town of Gay on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, where ongoing erosion and re-deposition of the stamp sands has buried miles of native, white-sand beaches. Stamp sands are also encroaching onto Buffalo Reef, a large...

While recording fish habitat use via electronic sensors, biologgers can also be viewed as autonomous environmental monitoring systems with the organism as a vehicle. This dual perspective has provided novel results from marine ecosystems but has not been applied to freshwater ecosystems. To understand limitations in freshwater, we evaluated miniature depth and temperature recorders, as aquatic monitoring systems in Lake Erie. As part of an acoustic telemetry study, biologgers were implanted in a subsample of walleye, Sander vitreus in 2014. Biologgers were equipped with sensors capable of measuring water temperature and depth at half-hour intervals for up to a year. Recaptures provided six biologgers for analysis...

This data release contains predictions of stream biological condition as defined by the Chesapeake basin-wide index of biotic integrity for stream macroinvertebrates (Chessie BIBI) using Random Forest models with landscape data for small streams (≤ 200 km2 in upstream drainage) across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW). Predictions were made at eight time periods (2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2019) according to changes in landcover using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The Chessie BIBI data used were provided by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin. Uncertainty was calculated using model prediction intervals. For complete data descriptions and data interpretation see associated...

This dataset documents the number of normally developed hatched free embryos, abnormally developed hatched free embryos, and viable unhatched embryos from two laboratory trials (shovelnose sturgeon during April and pallid sturgeon during May 2016) in substrate conditions designed to simulate potential fates within a dynamic riverine environment. Trials were performed with substrate treatments that consisted of clean glass (control), gravel, medium-coarse sand, and fine sand-silt. Medium-coarse sand and fine sand-silt substrates were each tested three ways: unburied, partially buried, and fully buried (1–2 millimeter depth). Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon embryos were exposed to trial conditions from the...

The Lake Powell Coring Project was a USGS research effort, in cooperation with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. National Park Service. In the fall of 2018, hydraulic piston cores targeted sediment that had been deposited in Lake Powell. This large reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona was created after the completion of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. Retrieval and analysis of cores was undertaken in response to the Gold King mine release from the Bonita Peak Mining District in Colorado on August 5, 2015. This event resulted in the containment loss of three-million gallons of mine-impacted waters which flowed from the Animas River into the San Juan River,...

Since the catastrophic releases of CO2 in the 1980s, Lakes Nyos and Monoun in Cameroon experienced CO2 recharge at alarming rates of up to 80 mol/m2 per yr. Total gas pressures reached 8.3 and 15.6 bar in Monoun (2003) and Nyos (2001), respectively, resulting in gas saturation levels up to 97%. These natural hazards are distinguished by the potential for mitigation to prevent future disasters. Controlled degassing was initiated at Nyos (2001) and Monoun (2003) amid speculation it could inadvertently destabilize the lakes and trigger another gas burst. Our measurements indicate that water column structure has not been compromised by the degassing and local stability is increasing in the zones of degassing. Furthermore,...
