In 2013 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) drilled and logged a continuous core located on the northeast flank of the Alcova anticline in the southeastern part of the Wind River Basin, Wyoming to evaluate the source rock potential of the Lower and lowermost Upper Cretaceous marine shales (fig. 1). The well, named the Alcova Reservoir AR–1–13, was spud in the lower part of the Frontier Formation and ended in the upper part of the Cloverly Formation, and recovered core between 40.5 feet (ft) and 623 ft (figs. 1, 2). After coring was completed the USGS recorded geophysical data from the well bore, with digital data collected to a depth of 622 ft. Data include natural gamma, resistivity, conductivity, density, sonic,...

In 2006, Rock Well Petroleum drilled and logged nearly 1,600 feet (ft) of continuous core on the southern part of the Casper arch in Natrona County, Wyoming (see fig1.png). The core hole, named the Poison Spider core #8 penetrated the interval extending from the Upper Cretaceous Frontier Formation to the Triassic Alcova Limestone. The core was subsequently donated to the U.S. Geological Survey Core Research Center (CRC) in Lakewood, Colorado, where it was sampled to evaluate the hydrocarbon source rock potential of the Lower and lowermost Upper Cretaceous marine shales.

The Candy Lane 1 (CL-1) core was acquired in November 2005 as part of a multidisciplinary effort by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation to investigate the Mancos Shale in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, Montrose County, Colorado. The Upper Cretaceous Mancos core was taken from the NE 1/4 sec. 8, T. 50 N., R. 9 W. corresponding to approximately lat 38.61717° N., long 107.90174° W. The CL-1 core contains part of the lower portion of the Mancos Shale Formation; Mancos Formation members in ascending order include the Bridge Creek Limestone (partial), Fairport, Blue Hill, Juana Lopez, Montezuma Valley, and Niobrara (partial). After coring was completed,...

Thirty-nine samples were selected to evaluate the source rock potential of the marine shales in the cored interval as determined by total organic carbon (TOC) and programmed pyrolysis analysis. Five samples are from the lower part of the...

As part of a broader research program to examine domestic source rock reservoirs, the Gulf Coast Petroleum Systems project of the USGS Energy Resources Program drilled a research borehole into Late Cretaceous mudstones in McLennan County, Texas, including the Cenomanian-Turonian Eagle Ford Group. A comprehensive wireline geophysical logging suite and over 600 ft of continuous core were obtained to advance the understanding of the stratigraphy, rock and fluid properties, burial history, and depositional environment of these uncompacted and thermally immature Eagle Ford source rocks. Geophysical logs were calibrated with geochemical core data to characterize mineralogical variability and petrophysical characterization...
