The purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. The core field methods continue to be underwater videography and timed coral species inventories. Findings presented in this report include data from 109 stations at 37 sites sampled from 1996 through 2008 in the Florida Keys and 1999 through 2008 in the Dry Tortugas. The report describes the annual differences (between...

A reach of the North Santiam River, Oregon, was used as a case study in an ongoing effort to develop and test uncrewed aircraft system (UAS)-based salmon habitat mapping techniques using: (1) particle image velocimetry (PIV) for estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data; and (2) two-dimensional (2D) flow modeling based on remotely sensed topography and bathymetry (topo-bathymetry). Direct measurements of flow velocity were obtained using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and used to assess the accuracy of the image-derived velocity estimates and modeled flow fields. Water depth was measured using a single beam echosounder and was used to calibrate and validate image-derived depth estimates...

This child data release includes RGB (red-green-blue) videos acquired from an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. One of the primary goals of this tracer experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) from various types of remotely sensed data in a large, highly turbid natural river channel. Previous research on remote sensing of tracer dye concentrations has focused on clear-flowing streams, but the Missouri River is much more turbid. As a result, the effect of the dye on the reflectance of the water could be obscured by the effects of suspended sediment on reflectance....

This data release includes video files and image-processing results used to conduct the analyses of hibernation patterns in groups of bats reported by Hayman et al. (2017), "Long-term video surveillance and automated analyses reveal arousal patterns in groups of hibernating bats.” Thermal-imaging surveillance video cameras were used to observe little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) in a cave in Virginia and Indiana bats (M. sodalis) in a cave in Indiana during three winters between 2011 and 2014. There are 740 video files used for analysis (‘Analysis videos’), organized into 7 folders by state/site and winter. Total size of the video data set is 14.1 gigabytes. Each video file in this analysis set represents one...

A reach of the North Santiam River, Oregon, was used as a case study in an ongoing effort to develop and test image velocimetry algorithms for estimating surface flow velocities in river channels from remotely sensed data. Video was acquired from an unoccupied aircraft system, UAS, and used as input to the image velocimetry algorithms. Direct measurements of flow velocity were obtained using an acoustic Doppler current profiler, ADCP, and used to assess the accuracy of the image velocimetry algorithms. The UAS-based video was acquired from a DJI Matrice 210 quadcopter equipped with a Zenmuse X4S optical camera on July 25, 2022. The video is provided in its native form, with a frame rate of 30 Hertz and an *.mov...

These data are a part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. The overall goal is to develop high-resolution (1:25,000) interpretive maps, based on multibeam sonar data and seabed sampling, showing surficial geology and seabed sediment dynamics. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the data collected will aid research on the ecology of fish and invertebrate species that inhabit the region. The Sanctuary's research vessel, R/V Auk, visited a total of 233 locations on Stellwagen Bank during six separate surveys from May 2016 to April 2019. During these surveys a customized...

This data release contains digital video files from the USGS field activity 2014-607-FA, a survey of the Oregon Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Floating Wind Farm Site in 2014. Video data were collected over 3 days between September 6 and September 9, 2014 using a towed camera sled system. 11.6 hours of video were collected along 18 transects; the mean length of time per transect was 38 minutes. Video operations were conducted by deploying up drift of a target and drifting over it at speeds of 1 knot or slower. The video data were collected in order to ground truth geologic and habitat interpretations of sonar data collected during the same field activity. The video-survey locations were chosen after the sonar mapping...
