These metadata sets present the comprehensive geochemical composition of solid and water samples from the site of a 11.4ML (million liters) wastewater spill discovered in January, 2015. Analyses of a pipeline sample (analyses of select analytes), supplied by the North Dakota Department of Health are also included. The spill was near Blacktail Creek, north of Williston, ND. The leak was from a pipeline located approximately 70m from Blacktail Creek. The creek flows 17km before entering the Little Muddy River, a tributary to the Missouri River. The study included samples collected in waters upstream and downstream from Blacktail Creek in February and June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. These data sets include field...
The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at Goose Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northeast Montana using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2017. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 15 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately 1 square-kilometer. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts, lag corrected for apparent offsets between recorded GPS location and data locations for each coil pair, and averaged to a sounding distance of 1m along the survey...

Contamination to aquatic resources from co-produced water (brine) associated with energy development has been documented in the northeastern portion of the Williston Basin; an area mantled by glacial drift. The presence and magnitude of brine contamination can be determined using the contamination index (CI) value from water samples. Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey published a section (~2.59 km2) level risk assessment of brine contamination to aquatic resources for Sheridan County, Montana, using oilfield and hydrogeological parameters. Our goal was to improve the Sheridan County assessment (SCA) and evaluate the use of this new Williston Basin assessment (WBA) across 31 counties mantled by glacial drift in...
Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at Norman Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northwest North Dakota using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2018. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 41 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately 2 square-kilometers. At this survey location, the 4m transmitter-receiver horizontal co-panar and perpendicular coil orientations did not function due to equipment malfunction. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts,...

The lake and reservoir water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) and the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. The the Williston Basin has been a leading petroleum producer for over a half century with development beginning around the turn of the 20th century. The spatial and temporal spread of the associated wells is important from both an economic perspective but also a natural resource view. These data were gathered from the state/province oil and gas divisions for use by USGS researchers and their collaborators in water resource specific studies. Each state/province provides slightly different information for each well, with some providing more information and others less. We attempted to create a spatial cross-walk that allowed each database to be merged to one another to create a final regional spatial database. Each...

The input form provides a record of the complete input values required for the quantitative assessment of water and proppant associated with oil and gas production for the continuous oil and gas resource in a geologically defined Assessment Unit, and the same form template is used for all such assessments. Each USGS water and proppant assessment builds from a USGS petroleum assessment that provides the geologic foundation for the water and proppant assessment. Assessment units are defined in the course of conducting the petroleum assessment.

Advances in drilling technique have facilitated a rapid increase in hydrocarbon extraction from energy shales, including the Williston Basin in central North America. This area overlaps with the Prairie Pothole Region and greater than 35% of wetlands are less than or equal to 1 km from a petroleum-related well. Legacy practices often released saline co-produced waters (brines) that were chloride rich wastes, affecting wetland water quality directly or persisting in sediments. Despite the potential threat of brine contamination to aquatic habitats, there has been little research into their ecological effects. We capitalized on a gradient of legacy brine-contaminated wetlands in northeast Montana to conduct laboratory...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during October 2014 in a 553-square-kilometer area that includes the East Poplar oil field on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeastern Montana, USA. Data surround the city of Poplar and extend south into the Missouri River floodplain. Data were acquired with the SkyTEM301 transient electromagnetic helicopter-borne system together with a Geometrics G-822 magnetometer. The AEM average depth of investigation is about 80 m. The survey was flown at a nominal flight height of 30 m above terrain along north-south oriented flight lines; the majority of lines had a nominal spacing of 200 m with a sub-block area in the central portion of the oil...
