Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at Beaver Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northwest North Dakota using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2018. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 127 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately 8 square-kilometers. At this survey location, the 4m transmitter-receiver horizontal co-planar and perpendicular coil orientations did not function due to equipment malfunction. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts,...

Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at Stateline National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northeast Montana using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2017. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 3 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately .2 square-kilometers. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts, lag corrected for apparent offsets between recorded GPS location and data locations for each coil pair, and averaged to a sounding distance of 1m along the survey...

The organic composition of produced waters (flowback and formation waters) from the Bakken Formation and the Three Forks Formation in the Williston Basin, North Dakota were examined in this study in order to aid in the remediation of surface contamination due to spills during transport and help develop treatment methods for recycling. Twelve produced water samples were collected from wells in the Bakken and Three Forks Formations at the well head and analyzed for non-purgable dissolved organic carbon (NPDOC), acetate, and extractable hydrocarbons. NPDOC and acetate concentrations from sampled wells from ranged from 33-190 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and 16-40 mg/L, respectively. Concentrations of individual extractable...

Under the direction and funding of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) with guidance and encouragement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there has been a decadal strategic plan in place to call for geologic mapping across the nation. This call has been increasing the need for digital data that has not yet been made available. With such a demand, physical data is being re-released as vector-based, GIS operable data, which is viable as a corporate asset to the USGS. This collection of reports is part of the compilation and synthesis efforts hampered by the distributed nature of subsurface investigations at the USGS and a general lack of cataloging and archiving of 3-D geological...

Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at selected U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service managed lands in northeast Montana and northwest North Dakota using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winters of 2017 and 2018. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 427 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of nearly 26 square-kilometers. The surface water water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) or the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. These metadata sets present the comprehensive geochemical composition of solid and water samples from the site of a 11.4ML (million liters) wastewater spill discovered in January, 2015. Analyses of a pipeline sample (analyses of select analytes), supplied by the North Dakota Department of Health are also included. The spill was near Blacktail Creek, north of Williston, ND. The leak was from a pipeline located approximately 70m from Blacktail Creek. The creek flows 17km before entering the Little Muddy River, a tributary to the Missouri River. The study included samples collected in waters upstream and downstream from Blacktail Creek in February and June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. These data sets include field...

The data presented includes chloride concentration and specific conductance in surface water collected from 33 wetlands in the Williston Basin of Montana and North Dakota, 2015-2017 as well as count data for three species of amphibians captured at each wetland. Data also includes concentrations of metals in bed sediment and larval amphibians collected from 32 and 12 wetlands, respectively in 2015-2016. Abundance of barred tiger salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium), boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata), northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) was estimated at 33 wetlands from 2015-2017. Surface water was collected in the summer from each wetland in 2015-2017 at the same time as the amphibian surveys and analyzed...

Biological endpoints for three focal test species [Daphnia magna (mortality), Psuedacris maculata (mortality, growth, and development), and Lemna gibba (growth)] in response to exposure to reconstituted or field-collected water under laboratory conditions. Field-collected waters were collected from wetlands within the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the United States. Reconstituted water was mixed to mimic some chemistry of surface water from brine contaminated PPR wetlands. Also included are water quality and chemical concentration data from all assays.

Paleo-water depth is an important component of modeling surface temperatures through time. Paleo-water depth values represent the elevation of the sediment-water interface relative to global mean sea level at a particular point in geologic time. In most of the model time steps, paleo-water depth values were treated uniformly (single value) across the modeled area of interest, as a simplifying assumption. Most of the model layers were deposited in marine conditions, where the sediment-water interface was below mean sea level (positive paleo-water depths); however, the ground surface of the Williston Basin is now several thousand feet above sea-level, and the Cenozoic model layers were likely deposited in continental...

Basal heat flow from the crystalline basement and lithospheric mantle into the sedimentary column is a required boundary condition in the petroleum systems model. The model uses two basal heat flow conditions that are described using two ASCII grids that show map variations in heat flow (mW/m2). The “BHF000_BasalHeatFlow_Calib.asc” grid describes the modern-day basal heat flow calibrated to, and derived from subsurface temperature data, including 24 high-resolution static temperature logs from the North Dakota Geological Survey and a large proprietary dataset (>1,000) of drill stem test (DST) and bottom hole temperatures (BHT) from boreholes throughout Montana and North Dakota provided by IHS Markit ® (2022). This...
