In working toward the elements of a National Biodiversity Assessment that will be presented in a number of ways, including through the National Biogeographic Map, we are pursuing the idea of developing discrete Biogeographic Analytical Packages. These are essentially encapsulated scientific workflows with inputs, processing, and outputs that result in data visualizations, explanatory text, references, and other information that can be presented together in various ways. Each Package should be able to be fully communicative on its own but may be put together with other Packages into a composition.
The Software Reference Library is an experimental top-level system collection in ScienceBase designed to provide an alternative organization to software assets cataloged in ScienceBase. It was inspired by the development of the Biogeographic Information System and is a virtual component of that framework. The experimental aspect of this for ScienceBase is the overall flattening of the hierarchical system, which has become entirely too complex over time. Biogeographic Synthesis Compositions are made up of Biogeographic Analysis Packages. The Compositions present a logical collection of analyses, scientific findings, and other information about a geographic region or issue. Eventually, the Compositions will be driven semantically to bring in particular BAPs based on their characteristics. In the short term, we are configuring Compositions manually by linking specific Packages to each Composition.
The Data Reference Library is an experimental top-level system collection in ScienceBase designed to provide an alternative organization to data assets cataloged in ScienceBase. Within the Biogeographic Information System, the Assessment Library provides an organized reference for components specific to an assessment used by applications of the System.
The Taxa Information Registry is a component of the Biogeographic Information System that provides routes to various lists of species of interest in our analytical work. This ScienceBase collection documents the routes and serves as a directory of the species lists or sources of taxa names of interest in our work. Each registered source is run through a set of living information assembly processes that consult various sources of related information to assemble data that we put behind our API for our own use and use by others. Gap Analysis Project (GAP) habitat maps are predictions of the spatial distribution of suitable environmental and land cover conditions within the United States for individual species. Mapped areas represent places where the environment is suitable for the species to occur (i.e. suitable to support one or more life history requirements for breeding, resting, or foraging), while areas not included in the map are those predicted to be unsuitable for the species. The Biogeographic Characterization Branch (BCB) has conducted a number of activities over the last several years that have resulted in databases of named, significant spatial features that are important as a foundation for other databases and in analytical processes. We've discovered that all of these activities involve some of the same type of work in quality controls and data prep and result in a simple, common schema for the fundamental data attributes. The collections here are logical packages of biogeographic data assets that we assemble in order to tell particular stories, build mapping applications, and present information together in ways that work toward a purpose.
