The California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) initiated the Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) to assess effects of oil and gas development on groundwater designated for any beneficial use. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the technical lead in conducting the RMP through the California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater (COGG) Program, working in cooperation with the State Water Board, and in partnership with other State and local agencies. The USGS collected and analyzed groundwater, surface water, and associated quality control (QC) samples in the Elk Hills study area during June 2017–April 2018. The Elk Hills study area includes the Elk Hills and North Coles Levee Oil Fields and...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board compiled and analyzed data on water production and produced water disposal on land at Midway-Sunset, Buena Vista, Elk Hills, McKittrick, Cymric, South Belridge, North Belridge, and Lost Hills Oil Fields in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley (SWSJV), Kern County, California. Data were compiled from information in state and local agencies databases and cover a period of record ranging from the early 1900's through 2019. Datasets include shapefiles with locations of retention ponds and natural drainage systems used for produced water disposal, total volumes of produced water disposed of at percolation and evaporation...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity, characterizing aquifer systems, and documenting the effects of oil field water injection in the Elk Hills Elk Hills, Buena Vista, and Coles Levee Oil Fields, San Joaquin Valley, California. Data provided in this data release include borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of water samples, hydrologic data, geological formation depths, and information on observed well log resistivity anomalies—interpreted to be from injection for disposal of produced water from oil wells or from natural causes. The data reported here were...

This data release Child Item contains groundwater elevation data and the associated model/code used to create groundwater elevation surfaces in and around the Elk Hills and North Coles Levee Oil Fields. The data and model provided here are part of an interpretative manuscript by Warden and others (2024). The data compiled and analyzed here are part of the California State Water Resources Control Board Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program and the U.S. Geological Survey California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater (COGG) Program.

This data release contains groundwater elevation data and the associated model/code used to create groundwater elevation surfaces in and around select oil fields in California. The data and model provided here are intended to supplement interpretative manuscripts. Specific study areas will be added as Child Items found in this data release. Groundwater elevations are usually collected from individual wells at discrete times. However, we are often interested in looking at a continuous surface of groundwater levels for a variety of reasons including to examine potential gradients, or directions of groundwater flow. Therefore, we created continuous space-time models of groundwater elevations using a Gaussian process....
