Unprocessed, surficial sediment sample collected by MGS as part of the Chesapeake Bay Earth Science Study (CBESS), a multidisciplinary research effort authorized by Maryland and Virginia through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). MGS collected samples throughout the Maryland Chesapeake Bay according to two sampling schemes, mid-bay and nearshore. This nearshore sample was processed to develop a baseline inventory of the physical and geochemical characteristics of bay bottom sediments. Since its collection, it has been stored indoors in a plastic bag, but at ambient outdoor temperatures.
