Release of various synthetic organic compounds to the environment has caused soil and ground-water pollution in many places. The processes which control the persistence and movement of these materials are not well understood. A better understanding is necessary to aid in construction of models to predict movement and fate of pollutants in the subsurface and for design of control and abatement techniques.
