Summary

Death Valley National Park, California. Wood post shattered by salt, an example of evaporation effects on the salt pan. This wood post, 3.5 feet long, was set in the flood plain of Salt Creek about 1910; ground level was at the lower edge of the bulge. Water rising in the wood evaporated at ground level and burst the wood with precipitated salts. Drawn by J.R. Stacy from photo, circa 1960.
