Summary
The Center for Biological Informatics (CBI, now reorganized into the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis unit of the Core Science Systems Mission Area) and the Fort Collins Science Center Web Applications Team joined resources to integrate their respective Metadata Tool and ScienceBase system: Incorporated the CBI-developed Metadata Tool into ScienceBase metadata workflow. This work involved diagraming how several independently developed systems can work together to manage data in the USGS, and make it available to partners and the public. See the illustration of the USGS data management workflow from the 2011 CDI Annual Report (link in Resource section below). Incorporated the CBI-developed Metadata Tool into ScienceBase metadata workflow. This work involved diagraming how several independently developed systems can work together to manage data in the USGS, and make it available to partners and the public. See the illustration of the USGS data management workflow fromthe 2011 CDI Annual Report(link in Resource section below).
Designed and built a rich user interface client that can be implemented in any application for metadata collection and editing. This project is near-completion for Phase 1, and will be completed in FY12. Phase 1 was development of the metadata editor. Upon completion and review (February, 2012), Phase 2 will begin, incorporating the editor into the ScienceBase data uploader tool.
The purpose of the application is to infer as much information as possible from the target dataset to minimize the documentation burden on scientists while still providing enough information for others to find and assess the dataset.
