Summary

Resource managers must balance the impacts of competing management decisions on multiple, interacting natural systems. Hydrologic and ecological processes, such as groundwater fluctuations and riparian evapotranspiration, can be tightly coupled. Ideally, managers would have tools and models that include all processes to better understand how each management action would propagate through the environment. Because resources are limited, management tools that include only the most important processes may be more realistic. valueOur goal is to develop a metric of hydrologic linkage strength, based on simulations of complex interactions and feedbacks among riparian hydrologic processes and variable climate, for weighing the impact of conservation and preservation actions. We define a feedback index number that indicates where riparian systems may be more resilient or more vulnerable to climatic change. The index number quantifies: 1) the vulnerability of riparian reaches to climate change over intermediate, interannual, and interdecadal time frames; 2) target threshold limits at which management actions can strengthen or weaken critical linkages; and 3) the hydrologic characteristics that control linkage strength and riparian system vulnerability.
