Summary

Problem Perchlorate detected in a shallow supply well within the southern portion of the Locust Valley Water District (LVWD) has prompted interest in determining the possible existence of a deeper confined aquifer (North Shore Aquifer) that may be protected from shallow contamination (fig. 1). Previous USGS studies in this area indicate the northern part of Nassau County has a complex hydrogeologic framework (Stumm and others, 2004). A previously mapped buried glacial valley may extend and be present at this location. If such a buried valley exists, all Cretaceous age deposits (Magothy aquifer, Raritan clay, and Lloyd aquifer) may have been eroded and Pleistocene-aged deposits including the North Shore aquifer and North Shore confining [...]

typeShort Project Description
valuePerchlorate detected in a shallow supply well within the southern portion of the Locust Valley Water District (LVWD) has prompted interest in determining the possible existence of a deeper confined aquifer (North Shore Aquifer) that may be protected from shallow contamination. The proposed scope of work will advance knowledge of the hydrogeologic framework and water-quality conditions in the area. This knowledge will help the LVWD make decisions regarding the development and management of the sole-source aquifer system which is the primary source of drinking water in the region.
projectProducts
productDescriptionHydrogeologic data, water-quality data, and geophysical logs will be archived by the USGS and made available to the LVWD. The water-level and water-quality data will be stored in the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) and available for retrieval from http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/gw and http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/qw, respectively. An updated hydrogeologic framework of the area will be completed using cross-sections. Chloride-bromide water quality data previously collected by the USGS will be used to determine potential hydraulic interconnections to surface road-salt application. A data summary will be transmitted to the LVWD at the end of the field effort and all results and interpretations will be presented at a regional scientific conference and published as a proceedings paper.
