Summary

This dataset contains a set of properties assembled for dam removals. It is part of the distributed data architecture for the National Dam Removal Science Database. The properties provide specifications for the removed dam, details about the removal process, and associated information about the river and reservoir. The terms (properties) in the dataset come from the Dam Removal vocabulary, with field names in the first line of the CSV providing direct URI/URL references to the appropriate term. The dataset is provided in CSV format as a snapshot of what is ultimately a dynamic data stream coming from text mining and other synthesis operations. The dataset was originally derived from the "dams" table in the USGS Dam Removal Science [...]

Purpose

The Dam Removal Properties dataset provides details about the dam and the removal process for use in analyzing correlations and differences in dam removal projects and the scientific studies conducted on them. The Dam Removal Properties data also exist in a CartoDB instance (reference web link) that serves as the backing for the Dam Removal Information Portal.

Provenance

Data source
Input directly
The data assembled in the CSV originally came from the "Dams" table in the associated USGS Dam Removal Science Database (reference item associations in the ScienceBase item). That table went through a number of offline processing steps that will be formalized into code at a later time to produce a derivative that contained the featureuri reference to dam removals in the Spatial Feature Registry as the persistent identifier used throughout the National Dam Removal Science Database. Final processing steps to produce the initial iteration of a usable standalone table were executed through OpenRefine and are captured in JSON files attached with this ScienceBase item. Those steps removed unnecessary columns where the information is now available in the Spatial Feature Registry and changed column names to provide direct URL references to the ScienceBase Vocabulary where the Dam Removal terms are defined.
