Summary

Inland fisheries are critical for global food security and human well-being. However, fish production may be threatened by changes in climate and land use. Understanding this threat is crucial to effectively manage inland fisheries in the future. To address this need, this project will identify which types of lakes across the globe are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate and land use changes. Lakes will be categorized based on their depth, vulnerability to food insecurity, and vulnerability to water insecurity – variables which can all influence how detrimental climate and land use change will actually be on a lake. valueWe propose that analyzing time series of fisheries harvests and ecosystem changes can better show effects of climate change and land use on inland fisheries than an approach that analyzes data from hundreds of lakes in a given year. Tracking large-scale landscape changes (e.g., land use) as well as annual changes (e.g., water levels that can drive recruitment and fishing access) on a lake-by-lake basis can help inform how long-term trends may influence fisheries. Our main objectives in this study are to (1) understand the relative importance among climate change and land use variables to fisheries production in inland lakes with different levels of depth and food and water security, and (2) predict changes in fisheries production in inland lakes under scenarios of predicted land use and climate changes.
