Summary
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Geological Survey is the state's oldest natural resources agency, established by the state legislature in 1837. Commonly referred to as the Ohio Geological Survey, the agency has been in continuous operation since 1900 and is one of the seven originally chartered divisions of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which was created by the legislature in 1949. The Survey seeks to provide geologic information and services needed for responsible management of Ohio's natural resources and to be recognized as an innovative team conducting relevant geologic investigations and increasing awareness of Ohio geology. Dedicated to researching and mapping Ohio's geology, the Survey is the state's permanent archive and public access point for geologic data that supports industry, commerce, environment, safety, and public education. This collection of the Ohio Geological Survey's slide images captures geological equipment, activities, and features in the state. Historical images showing outcrops, quarries, and field sites in Ohio often represent a visual record of places that have been reclaimed or are no longer accessible for a variety of reasons. The Ohio Photographic Slide and Historic Photo Archiving and Digitization project identified, processed, and provided detailed information for 2,500 slide images covering a time frame of the 1930s through the early twenty-first century. This collection represents a sample set from the Ohio Geological Survey's larger image collection. To learn more about the ODNR Division of Geological Survey, please visit OhioGeology.com.
