Summary

This portion of the data release presents water column acoustic backscatter data collected in the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington, in 2013. Shipboard surveys to measure the acoustic properties of the water column were performed between May 28, 2013 and June 2, 2013 (USGS Field Activity S-03-13-WO) using a Biosonics single beam echosounder. The transducer was pole-mounted to the side of the R/V Park Snavely at approximately 1 m below the water surface and measurements were recorded as the vessel navigated along several cross-channel transects within the MCR. Summary

This portion of the data release presents water column acoustic backscatter data collected in the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington, in 2013. Shipboard surveys to measure the acoustic properties of the water column were performed between May 28, 2013 and June 2, 2013 (USGS Field Activity S-03-13-WO) using a Biosonics single beam echosounder. The transducer was pole-mounted to the side of the R/V Park Snavely at approximately 1 m below the water surface and measurements were recorded as the vessel navigated along several cross-channel transects within the MCR. The 430 kHz transducer was set with a pulse length of 0.2 ms and a ping rate of 10 Hz and recorded data to a depth of 35 m below the transducer assuming a sound velocity of 1471.4 m/s. A Trimble R7 global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver and Trimble Zephyr Model 2 GNSS antenna were used to provide positioning during the surveys. Real-time differential corrections from the Washington State Reference Network (http://www.wsrn3.org/) were applied to achieve survey-grade horizontal and vertical GNSS positions while the vessel was underway. Biosonics Visual Acquisition software (version 6.1.0.7382) was used for data acquisition and merging of the acoustic and positioning data. Raw backscatter data from each ping were digitized with an analog to digital converter in the echosounder at a rate of 41667 Hz, resulting in a profile of acoustic backscatter counts versus depth at intervals of 1.8 cm. Raw counts of acoustic backscatter were converted to target strength assuming a seawater absorption coefficient of 0.085 dB/m, a source level of 216 dB re 1 μPa m, and receiver sensitivity of -61.4 dB/count derived from calibrations performed in a test tank by the manufacturer.

A total of 62 km of tracklines were surveyed in the MCR between May 28 and June 2, 2013. Several cross-channel transects (fig. 1) were surveyed repeatedly to characterize changes backscatter amplitude at different stages of the tide cycle (Table 1). Example data from one transect surveyed at three different stages of the tide cycle is shown in figure 2. Digital data containing the data in netCDF format were combined in a .zip archive files for each day of data collection and are provided below.
