Summary

Mapping ecological systems of Kansas and Nebraska expands upon previous work completed for Texas and Oklahoma and advances the desire of regional and state partners to have a consistently mapped seamless land cover for the Great Plains region. Land cover provides the framework to inform wildlife management and conservation decisions by identifying the current landscape configuration. Quantify the amount and types of habitat, by location, currently available is critical to determining where conservation and management resources should be allocated.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to produce a ecological systems based land map for Nebraska. Mapping based on ecological sites is meaningful since different vegetation types are supported in different regions. We can map the ecological site factors and the land cover (coarse land cover, 14 classes including deciduous forest, evergreen forest, herbaceous, shrubland, water, etc.). From those data sets we can model the current vegetation (ecological systems, or in some cases some other finer or coarser level from the National Vegetation Classification). So models take the general form of: Abiotic site variables + geographic region + coarse land cover = mapped current vegetation type Furthermore, mapping is best accomplished using image objects, which facilitates better accuracy and spatial resolution. The results are much easier to modify, manipulate, and up-date versus traditional land cover maps. Early results are viewed and then changed several times during production.
