Grizzly bear recovery zones (GBRZs) were delineated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to identify six distinct regions or ecosystems in the conterminous 48 United States where remnant grizzly bear populations were known or thought to have been present in 1993. These recovery zone boundaries were identified in the 1993 Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan released by the USFWS. The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) in the lower 48 conterminous United States was first listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act on July 28, 1975. These six recovery zones represent areas of adequate space and habitat to facilitate and secure a recovered status for viable and self-sustaining grizzly bear populations in the conterminous United States.
