Summary

PROBLEM As part of an effort to sustain a viable water-supply system for 8 million residents in New York City, and 1 million other residents in upstate New York that rely on City water, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has requested a multi-disciplinary study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to determine the source(s) of water to surface-water sites (springs and expressions) in areas adjacent to the Catskill Aqueduct. In the area near the Delaware Aqueduct, which has been determined by the USGS to have a water-tunnel contribution to flooding issues during periods of high precipitation, the NYCDEP plans to repair the leaks with a grouting procedure. However, without monitoring of hydrologic conditions, [...]

productDescriptionResults of the investigation will be disseminated through two final reports in the USGS Scientific Investigations Report series; one for the Delaware Aqueduct at Wawarsing, and one for the Catskill Aqueduct at High Falls. Real-time data collected may also be utilized with the USGS Water Alert System where users can be sent a text or email when water-level or discharge data from a real-time station reaches a selected threshold value. More information on the USGS Water Alert System is available at https://water.usgs.gov/wateralert A project website will also be developed and maintained with links to project information, approved hydrologic and water-quality data, and hydrographs. Hydrologic data will consist of groundwater-elevations, and may consist of precipitation quantities, and measured flow from surface expressions.
