Summary

The dataset contains 3 components: (1) acceleration data logger (ADL) data, (2) GPS location data, and (3) body temperature data. We have ADL data from pythons in captivity (N = 2) and in free-ranging snakes (N=4). We have GPS data for 3 out of 4 free-ranging snakes. We have body temperature data for all 4 free-ranging snakes.

Purpose

We aimed to establish a technique for monitoring the activity of Burmese pythons in the wild, while attempting to identify any behavioral patterns that could be used to help manage this invasive species in the Greater Everglades and South Florida. We used acceleration data loggers (ADLs) to continuously record the movements and body posture of pythons in captivity (N = 2) and in free-ranging snakes (N=4). Out of the 4 free-ranging snakes, we monitored the location of 3 of them using GPS data loggers, and we also monitored all 4 free-ranging snakes with body temperature data loggers. These data combined are useful for monitoring snake activity levels and are a valuable tool for informing snake control management practices.
