Summary

The Shasta salamander (Hydromantes shastae) has been petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act. The greatest threat to the species is likely habitat loss that will be caused by the increase in elevation of Shasta Lake that will occur with proposed increases in the height of Shasta Dam to increase water storage capacity and maintain cold water for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Another potential threat is the fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, which has not yet been detected in North America but is lethal to related salamanders (Hydromantes strinatii) in Europe (Martel et al. 2014). Purpose

The purpose of this project was to increase survey effort in select areas designated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to increase information about the range and probability of occurrence of Shasta salamanders. In particular, we sought to: 1) Develop and implement a systematic survey protocol for Shasta salamanders. 2) Survey for Shasta salamanders in areas deemed high priority by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). 3) Estimate Shasta salamander probability of occurrence and detection probabilities under the protocol, and propose modifications to the protocol that will increase detection probabilities and survey repeatability. This information is required to inform U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service management activities; both to assess the potential effects of increasing the level of Shasta Lake on Shasta salamanders and to evaluate whether the species complex should be listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
