Summary

This sample collection consists of a 1997 donation from the Shell Oil Company to the Alaska Geological Materials Center. It contains approximately 68,000 samples of following types: dart (short seafloor cores), seismic shothole, outcrop, and megafossils. 80% of the collection are outcrop samples. 5 percent of the collection has been inventoried with specific locations. Most of the collection is in good shape though many megafossil sample bags need to be replaced. The remainder of the collection will be inventoried in a future data preservation project

Purpose

The Alaska GMC provides access to one-of-a-kind samples from prior exploration efforts, a critical part of attracting new investment to our state and provided crucial raw data for researchers to better understand our natural resources. Recent discoveries on Alaska's North Slope have generated increasing interest in Alaska's oil and gas resources. The Shell Oil collection has substantial value to oil and gas producers newer to the state as well as those conducting new investigations.

Rights

All samples, processed materials, maps, documents, and data reports at the Alaska GMC are available to the public for examination except those designated by the Curator as confidential. Please contact the GMC, at 907-696-0079 or visit the website http://dggs.alaska.gov/gmc/ to arrange a visit.

Provenance

A pilot project was conducted in FY2020 to investigate the original Shell documentation and conduct a preliminary inventory of a small percentage of boxes in the collection. Assuming that sample documentation can be identified, a second phase project may be proposed in the future to create a full inventory and metadata for the remainder of the collection.
