Summary

This data record contains a CSV file with spectral reflectance (420-2114 nm) for sediment samples collected from each of four source locations (cropland, stream bank, glaciolacustrine, and street dust) located across sites in the Northwestern US during prior studies. Data were collected in a laboratory setting using Spectrecology USB4000-VIS-NIR and NIRQuest512-2.2 spectrometers. The data contain spectra collected from sieved, non-sieved, dry and suspended samples from each sample source, as well as spectra for calibration standards. Explanation of fields in contained in the spectral properties data table are described in a data dictionary. Purpose

This data was collected for the purpose of testing the application of visible and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy for discriminating the source of suspended and dry sediment. The goal of this research is to advance the application of spectroscopy for use with sediment sourcing. During this experiment two VIS-NIR spectrometers were tested for their ability to define source of dry and suspended sediment to determine the potential for the equipment to be deployed in a field or laboratory environment. These data could be used for further analysis on the use of spectroscopy as a proxy for physical and chemical properties of sediment.
