Summary

Rangelands have immense inherent spatial and temporal variability, yet assessments of land condition and trends are often assessed relative to the condition of a limited number of representative points. Ecological Potential (EP) data are spatially comprehensive, quantitative, and needed as a baseline for comparison of current rangeland vegetation conditions, trends, and management targets. Purpose

Rangelands are subject to many potential agents of change causing widespread loss of vegetation and soil integrity. Ongoing effects including grazing, invasive species, recreation, and water diversion have altered landscapes of the western U.S. To quantitatively assess the impacts of these events we need a baseline of the potential site characteristics such as vegetation composition and productivity. This baseline is needed to understand the extent of degradation and trajectories of land conditions to help guide policy and management decisions.
