The Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (NW CASC) delivers science to help fish, wildlife, water, land and people adapt to a changing climate. The NW CASC is hosted by the University of Washington in partnership with Boise State University, Oregon State University, the University of Montana, Washington State University, and Western Washington University. The NW CASC university consortium is designed to support coproduction of actionable science through all stages of the climate adaptation cycle, including awareness raising, risk assessment, and selection, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of response options. Research efforts focus on the science research themes outlined in the NW CASC’s 2018-2023 Science Agenda: aquatic resources, at-risk species and habitat, invasive species and diseases, forest ecosystems, shrubland ecosystems, working lands and waters. During the period of 2017-2022, the NW CASC consortium will strive to address two challenges i) executing transdisciplinary, socio-ecological research to assess risks and inform efforts to evaluate options and implement change in complex systems; and ii) assessing and interpreting existing knowledge for today’s decisions.
Each CASC is a formal collaboration between the USGS, a regional host university, and a multi-institution partner consortium. Through this collaboration, the host and consortium institutions undertake a number of activities, including conducting research science projects, supporting fellows and engaging with resource management partners.
