Summary

This dataset contains topographic (horizontal and vertical) data for 20 sites, surveyed November 6 to November 28, 2017 as part of documentation of flooding that occurred in Puerto Rico during and after Hurricane Maria (September to November 2017). Hurricane Maria hit the Island of Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017 and was one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history. USGS personnel conducted topographic surveys at selected stream sites to facilitate hydraulic modeling of peak streamflows (or discharges) – termed indirect measurements – using published standard USGS methods. Indirect (post-flood) measurements are used to characterize flood peaks that could not be determined using direct methods (for example current-velocity meters, [...]

Purpose

Metadata in this dataset characterize topographic data surveyed in November 2017 and used for indirect measurements of peak streamflow at 20 sites in Puerto Rico. Data are compiled in comma-delimited (.csv) files for each site. Each site data set includes columns with: 1) USGS station number; 2) horizontal (easting and northing) coordinates for all surveyed points, surveyed in either an arbitrary datum or North America Datum (NAD) of 1983; 3) elevation values for all surveyed points, surveyed in either an arbitrary vertical datum or assigned datum of the streamgage at which the survey was conducted; 4) a point identifier that describes the point; and 5) any remarks associated with each point, as documented by the survey team. Some sites require auxiliary stationing information derived from other measurement methods, provided in columns with: 2a) incremental distances measured between cross-section stations; and 2b) cumulative cross-section stationing determined from digital data sets (Light Detection and Ranging, or LiDAR data). A supporting file provides explanatory information about each measurement, including 1) USGS station number; 2) USGS station name; 3) the indirect method(s) used; 4) the computation software used; 5) horizontal and vertical datum of the survey; and 6) the correction needed to convert survey vertical datum to gage datum (if determined).
