Summary

Cassiterite (SnO2), a main ore mineral in tin deposits, was collected by multiple Russian geologists or obtained from museum collections in both the USA and Russia and dated at the U.S. Geological Survey. The dated samples represent four different mining districts spanning the entire country from the village of Pitkäranta in the west (31° E Longitude) to the Merekskoe Deposit in the Russian Far East (134°E Longitude). The samples were recovered from a variety of host deposit types that range from the Proterozoic to Phanerozoic. Purpose

These data present comparative LA-ICP-MS Pb-Pb and U-Pb dating results for cassiterite from a variety of geologic settings and ages from the Russian Karelia, Siberia, and the Russian Far East. Constraining the age of cassiterite mineralization is critical for delineating robust genetic models of tin deposits. The data set showed that despite highly variable U concentrations and common Pb abundances, cassiterite produce reliable geochronological information and also further demonstrate the practical application of the LA-ICP-MS analytical procedure for U-Pb dating of this ore mineral.
