Summary

The U.S. Geological Survey Central Energy Science Center (CERSC) was asked to provide allocations of oil and gas resources and numbers of potential wells calculated from these allocated resources for the BLM Carlsbad Planning Area in New Mexico. The resource allocations were based on the most current USGS assessment of continuous (unconventional) oil and gas resources within eleven geologically defined assessment units in the Delaware Basin (Gaswirth and others, 2018).

Purpose

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carlsbad Office, New Mexico, requested that the USGS CERSC allocate oil and gas resources from the CERSC oil and gas assessment of the Delaware Basin to the area of the Carlsbad Planning Area as background information for the BLM “Reasonable Foreseeable Development Scenario” document (in progress). Using published data from the 2018 assessment of the Delaware Basin, and up-to-date maps of mineral and oil and gas ownership within the Carlsbad Planning Unit provided by BLM, the USGS allocated oil and gas resources to all eleven assessment units that fall within the Planning Area and estimated the number of potential wells that may be needed to recover this resource.
