Summary

Scientists and engineers from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) Cal/Val Center of Excellence (ECCOE) collected in situ measurements using field spectrometers to support the validation of surface reflectance products derived from Earth observing remote sensing imagery. Data provided in this data release were collected during selected Earth observing satellite overpasses and tests during the months of May through November 2021. Purpose

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science Center (EROS) Cal/Val Center of Excellence (ECCOE) surface reflectance validation team is committed to validation of Landsat derived surface reflectance products. The Landsat surface reflectance products are now an operational product after the release of Landsat Collection 2 in December 2022. As the number of users and applications relying upon the surface reflectance product continues to grow, the need for validation is also increases. ECCOE is dedicated to expanding the validation effort by collecting radiance data over a target using a field spectrometers. These in-situ measurements can be converted to surface reflectance values, which allows the field collected data to be used as a validate source for the Landsat surface reflectance product. The data provided in this release are intended for validation of Earth observing optical remote sensor surface reflectance products. While the primary focus of the ECCOE is validation of the Landsat surface reflectance product, the data can be potentially be used for validation of other earth observing optical satellites at the discretion of the user.
