Purpose

The Grass Carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, is an invasive species in North America and has been recorded in 45 states with breeding populations in several major rivers. In an attempt to control or removed invasive species such as the Grass Carp, oral piscicide baits have been developed, in which piscicide is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Common piscicide based baits have been tested with mixed results on Grass Carp, indicating a need for a more consistent control method. Our goal was to develop a single-dose Ziram bait to target Grass Carp. Ziram is a broad-spectrum pesticide and agricultural fungicide not expected to persist in soil or water. Data were collected to determine if: 1) Ziram was lethal to Grass Carp and, 2) to determine a single lethal dose that could be use by managers to control the invasive species.
