The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) compiled a shapefile of Wyoming statewide historical oil and gas drilling activity for a research project initiated through the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). The WLCI is representative of the partnerships being formed by the USGS with other Department of the Interior bureaus, state and local agencies, industry, academia, and private landowners that are committed to maintaining healthy landscapes, sustaining wildlife, and preserving recreational and grazing uses as energy resources development progresses in southwestern Wyoming. Data were collected as part of a WLCI study to evaluate effects of landscape-level changes on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) due to disturbances, habitat treatments, development, and climate change in Wyoming from 1985-2019. The point vector data in the shapefile are suitable for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or other database and geospatial software. The data provide information on current and past oil and gas development activity. The data may be used to develop maps, perform geospatial analyses, or to evaluate spatial or temporal coverage of development in the area covered by the data. The information is intended to meet the needs of a wide community of users that includes practitioners of land use, wildlife, and habitat management as well as state and Federal agencies and the general public.
