Summary

Bathymetric data were collected with a single-beam echosounder in 2022 for 18 selected shallow (0-3 meters) areas to improve a digital elevation model (DEM) for Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir created by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Bathymetric data were collected in transects spaced approximately 20 meters apart. In addition to the bathymetric data, the locations and elevations of observed water surface and recovered high-water marks are being provided at select locations because of the high water observed during bathymetric data collection after a spring flood in 2022.

Purpose

Bathymetric data for selected shallow areas were collected to assist in the improvement of a DEM for Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir. The DEM was built as a portion of a habitat modeling project for Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir from the Plan of Study for the Evaluation of the International Joint Commission (IJC) 2000 Order for Rainy and Namakan Lakes and Rainy River. In addition, bathymetric data will improve modeling of performance indicators designed to assess the effects of water level management on aquatic vegetation, benthos, Northern Pike, Walleye, and other indicators.
