Summary

This metadata record describes a series of tabular datasets containing metrics used to characterize periods of anomalously low storage for select large reservoirs across the Conterminous United States for the climate years (April 1 – March 31) from 1981 to 2020. These data support the associated Simeone and others (2024) publication. The reservoirs in this dataset are those included in the ResOpsUS dataset, with sufficient data during the period of interest. These metrics include reservoir storage percentiles, identified low-storage anomaly events, annual low storages, low-storage anomaly statistics for each event, and trends in reservoir metrics. Purpose

Metrics used to characterize periods of anomalously low storage for select large reservoirs were developed as part of the National Drought Characterization and Prediction Project which is part of the USGS Water Mission Area (WMA) National Drought Program. This effort was undertaken to support statistical analysis, map display, and model parameterization and to help advance the understanding and prediction of hydrological drought across the Continental United States. These data were developed to support the associated publication (Simeone and others, 2024).
