Summary

This database contains literature citations and associated abstracts pertaining to the ecology and hydrology of terminal lakes in the Great Basin region of the western United States. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, nor did we perform a systematic meta-analysis; rather, literature records were included based on topical relevance.

Purpose

Despite extensive research on several terminal lakes of the Great Basin (e.g., Great Salt Lake), there is still considerable uncertainty regarding the hydrology and ecology of many lakes within this region. Unanswered questions include how these lakes function as a network for migratory waterbird species, how millions of waterbirds will respond to deteriorating conditions of some lakes, and how the essential prey base supporting different waterbird life history requirements will change with the lakes’ hydrology. We conducted an extensive literature synthesis on the hydrology and ecology of terminal lakes within the Great Basin to document potential gaps in understanding. The literature associated with this data release is being released to provide background on the ecology and hydrology of terminal lakes within the Great Basin for the resource and conservation community.
