Summary

This digital dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency to conduct a hydrologic resource assessment and develop an integrated numerical hydrologic model of the hydrologic system of Cuyama Valley, CA. As part of this larger study, the USGS developed this digital dataset of geologic data and three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework models, referred to here as the Cuyama Valley 3-D hydrogeologic framework models (3DHFM), that define the elevation, thickness, extent, and lithology-based texture variations of three hydrogeologic units in the Cuyama Valley, CA, groundwater basin. A USGS report that described the construction of 3-D geologic framework and textural [...]

Purpose

This digital dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study, done in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency, to be used as digital geologic input data for numerical simulation of the hydrologic system of Cuyama Valley, CA. The relevant phase of USGS work on the Cuyama Valley groundwater basin was conducted between 2010-2013, culminating in the documentation as USGS reports of the 3-D geologic framework in 2013 (Sweetkind and others, 2013) and hydrologic models and analysis of water availability in 2014 (Hansen and others, 2014). This work was largely conducted prior to the inception of the Federal Government’s Open Data Policy requiring Federally produced scientific data to be released in machine readable and open formats, using data standards, and to be made available in persistent, publicly available digital data repositories. The purpose of this data release is to make available as digital data the geologic input data and three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework models for the Cuyama Valley, CA groundwater basin as described in a previously published report (Sweetkind and others, 2013). This data release also fulfills a goal of the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program to release subsurface geologic data in geospatial form as part of a broad directive to develop 2D and 3D geologic information at detailed, national, and continental scales. Elevation and thickness of hydrogeologic units may be used to define the geohydrologic layering as part of numerical simulation of the groundwater basin. The location of faults may be used to define the location of potential horizontal flow barriers in numerical simulation of the groundwater system. Modeled sediment texture may be used to inform zonation of horizontal hydraulic conductivity within the numerical model. The intended uses of this dataset include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization applications.
