Purpose

This systematic transect-based “overhead” photographic survey was conducted to test the feasibility of using transect-based surveys to estimate numbers of Pacific Steller’s eiders. If successful, overhead surveys will be used to generate an independent estimate of eider abundance to contrast with the oblique photographic method and to better understand the distribution of flocks, particularly small flocks.
