Summary

We conducted a multi-year study (2016-2019) to quantify sources of duckling mortality, identify predator type, and estimate survival rates for Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) ducklings within Suisun Marsh, California.

Purpose

Duckling survival to fledging is a key factor influencing waterfowl population growth. After hatching, young ducklings must travel from upland nest sites to wetland brood sites, during which time they are especially vulnerable. We examined how duckling age, duckling body mass at hatch, hatch date, and the availability and salinity concentrations of nearby wetland habitats influenced duckling survival rates. Survival analyses were conducted separately by species.
