Collection of photographs taken during field work conducted on shorebirds in Utqiagvik, Alaska. Photos include those taken of adult shorebirds banded, completed datasheets, by crew members, by professional photographers, of plot stakes, and of resighted birds.

The originators of this dataset shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein.
Potential users of these data should first contact the data authors listed below, as potential biases may occur within the data depending on the intended use. For example, fox control was conducted within the area for a number of years, potentially reducing predation pressure in some years. Additionally, one plot (brw6) was located within the boundaries of a landfill fence, potentially biasing metrics within this plot as compared to the population. Limited data was collected in 2020 as a result of reduced field effort due to Covid-19. Therefore, potential users should contact the data authors to discuss intended use and how these data may or may not be applicable.

Utqiagvik_banded_birds: Photographs of adult shorebirds banded from 2009-2022 including photos of data book, color combination placed on the bird, and inner and outer wings. Photos are organized in folders by year and species (4 character acronym). Naming convention for each photo is band number_nestID_photo description. In some years, nestID may have been replaced by species or eliminated. Common photo descriptions include: ‘data’ = photo taken of data book while in the field. In some previous years ‘book’ may have been used. ‘combo’ = photo taken of color band combination placed on bird. In some previous years ‘bands’ may have been used. ‘entirewing’ = photo taken of entire wing. In some previous years ‘wing’ may have also been used. ‘innerwing’ = photo taken of just inner wing. ‘outerwing’ = photo taken of just outer wing. Other descriptions may have been used when necessary. If more than one photo was taken of a given photo type, a unique number was added to the end of the photo description.
Utqiagvik_banding_datasheets: Photographs of completed banding datasheets from 2003-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year and book number from 2003-2012, and just by year from 2013-2022. Naming convention for each photo is book and/or page number from 2003-2012. From 2013-2022, the naming convention for each photo is the nest number. If more than one photo was taken of a given photo type, a unique number was added to the end of the photo description.
Utqiagvik_crew_photos: Photographs of daily activities taken by crew members from 2009-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year and crew member (first initial and last name of bander). There is no naming convention for specific photos.
Utqiagvik_invertebrate_datasheets: Photographs of completed invertebrate datasheets from 2010-2022. Naming convention for each photo is invertebrates_year.
Utqiagvik_journal_species_datasheets: Photographs of completed daily journal (2008-2022) and species list (2003-2022). Photos are organized in folders by year. Naming convention for each photo is ‘birdlist’ or ‘dailyjournal’ followed by year. In previous years, a separate photo may be present for each page of the bird list or daily journal.
Utqiagvik_master_map_datasheets: Photographs of completed master maps of nest locations from 2003-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year. Naming convention for each photo is mastermaps_year. In previous years, a separate photo may be present for each master map.
Utqiagvik_nest_datasheets: Photographs of completed nest datasheets from 2003-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year and book number from 2003-2012, and by year and plot in 2013-2015, and just by year from 2016-2022. Naming convention for each photo is book and/or page number from 2003-2012. From 2013-2015, the naming convention is plot_nest number and just nest number in 2016-2022.
Utqiagvik_plot_stakes: Photographs of habitat taken at each plot stake on long-term shorebird monitoring plots. Photos are organized by plot. Naming convention for each photo is plot_stake_consecutive number.
Utqiagvik_predator_datasheets: Photographs of completed datasheets of predator counts from 2003-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year. Naming convention for each photo is year_plot_pred prior to 2021. After 2021, the naming convention is year_pred.
Utqiagvik_professional_photos: Photographs of daily activities taken by professional photographers. Photos are organized in folders by photographer name. There is no naming convention for specific photos.
Utqiagvik_resight_datasheets: Photographs of completed datasheets of resightings from 2013-2022. Photos of resighting datasheets prior to 2013 are included in the nest datasheet directory. Naming convention for each photo is year_resight.
Utqiagvik_resighted_birds: Photos of color bands of resighted adult birds from 2015-2022 used for verification of resighting database. Photos are organized in folders by year and species (4 character acronym). Naming convention for each photo is species_band number_date photo taken.
Utqiagvik_snow_datasheets: Photographs of completed snow survey datasheets from 2003-2022. Photos are organized in folders by year. Naming convention for each photo is year_plot_snow prior to 2021. After 2021, the naming convention is year_snow.
