Summary

In this data release, Cenozoic calcareous nannofossil occurrence charts are provided as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for 15 cores or outcrops from the Gulf Coastal Plain (Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia). Samples have been assigned a USGS sample number and are organized by depth below (cores and wells) or height above (outcrops) the land surface. Based on their known stratigraphic position, lithology, and specific calcareous nannofossil species content, each sample, where possible, was assigned to a geologic formation, age, and standard Martini (1971) calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic zone. Five additional reference files are provided: (1) location information for each core or outcrop, (2) a list of calcareous nannofossil species [...]

Purpose

Since joining the USGS in 1975, the senior author, Laurel Bybell, has examined thousands of geologic samples for their calcareous nannofossil content that were collected from cores, wells, and outcrops from many locations, but primarily from the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains. Most samples were examined to determine their geologic age. These data were of significant help to geologic mappers and hydrologists at the USGS, state geological surveys, and universities in understanding geologic formations and aquifers and their distribution through space a time. In addition, taxonomic and evolutionary studies of some calcareous nannofossil species and lineages were conducted to gain a better understanding of the fossil group and improve its utility in geologic dating.
