Summary

This hybrid medium-resolution national hydrography dataset with river corridor attributes (NHD-RC) for the conterminous United States (CONUS) was created by merging lentic and lotic attributes from the high-resolution NHDPlus (U.S. Geological Survey, 2020) into the medium-resolution NHDPlus Version 2.1 (U.S. Geological Survey, 2016). NHD-RC includes attributes from an additional 5.4 million small pond features and 5 million kilometers of small streams beyond the approximately 123,000 lentic waterbodies and 4 million kilometers of larger streams and rivers accounted for NHDPlus Version 2.1. This hybrid approach permitted the use of the many attributes that have been linked to NHD by others, including land cover and dam inventories, [...]

Purpose

NHD-RC is intended to serve as an intermediate step to allow for direct incorporation of high-resolution lentic and lotic attributes into existing water quality models such as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) models that are currently built on the NHDPlus Version 2.1 framework. For example, there are nearly 500,000 more small ponds located on the NHD network across the CONUS that can now be directly accounted for in the SPARROW models. The intent of this dataset is also to improve the classification of lentic waterbodies into managed and historic classes and examine the extent of human alteration to the river corridor. The effort to develop this dataset was undertaken to allow researchers and managers to quantify the effects of many different types of lentic waterbodies on water quality, conduct more comprehensive analyses of river corridors, and identify specific management scenarios—for example, how changes from faster flowing lotic waters to slower moving lentic waters impact hypoxic and harmful algal bloom occurrences—before a full downscaling of model input data and upgrade to high-resolution NHD is undertaken.
