U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Gap Analysis Project (GAP), 2020, Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) 2.1: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P92QM3NT.
Summary
PAD-US poster maps are available to increase awareness of PAD-US and aid user interpretation. The maps provide a general overview of management, not ownership, as Federal and other designated areas may overlap state, private, and other inholdings. The maps include U.S. States only (not Territories) based on the PAD-US 2.1 Combined Proclamation (Tribal areas and military lands are provided for context), Marine, Fee, Designation, Easement feature class, published by the USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS), Gap Analysis Project (GAP). The All Managers and Federal Managers maps illustrate the land or marine management agency. The Protection Status map depicts GAP Status Code (a measure of management intent to conserve biodiversity), [...]
The Protection Status map depicts GAP Status Code (a measure of management intent to conserve biodiversity), with lands and marine areas primarily managed for biodiversity, multiple uses, or with no known biodiversity protection mandate (e.g. local parks, private lands). The Public Access map describes general categories of access (Open, Restricted, Closed, Unknown) across the nation. See the PAD-US Data Manual for more information: https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/science-analytics-and-synthesis/gap/pad-us-data-manual .
NOTE: Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) Easements in the PAD-US 2.1 geodatabase overestimate protection and are not depicted in the poster maps (see PAD-US 2.1 Easement feature class where Agg_Src = 'FWS_PADUS2_1Easement_FWSInterest_Simplified' AND Loc_Ds = 'WPA'). The spatial data represents the overall tract boundary containing the wetland easement (about 12.5 million acres primarily in ND and SD) rather than the wetland area protected via easement (an estimated 13% of total parcel area based on documented acres provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)). In consultation with FWS, USGS plans to revise the classification of WPA Easements in PAD-US 3.0 from GAP Status Code 2 to GAP Status Code 4 to reflect spatial data gaps.
